One Small Step in Christ

Confidence for some can be hard to grasp.

The simple prospect of employment was life-shattering to April Case of Tennessee. Where others saw the possibilities of success for April, she only envisioned failure and humiliation.

How could April ever know success?

Through her Employment and Community First Choices program, April was able to tour businesses and shadow workers in hopes of discovering something she felt confident in tackling. One such “shadow job” was rolling flatware into cloth napkins at a local restaurant. Immediately, she knew she could, in her own words, “do this all day.”

Now April has expanded to setting up the restaurant’s catering locations with tables, tablecloths, place settings, and decorations for banquets and other events.

As Christians, at times, we look at what the Bible asks of us, and we are overwhelmed. Like April, we stumble on the little things and never reach the success God wants for us.

Galatians 5:1 says to step out in God and don’t look back.

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

April was freed from her fear of employment by taking that first step and moving into a job she felt she could do.

In the church, we can take the same approach. Try volunteering as a nursery helper for a month. Agree to pick up one elderly person for Sunday school. Offer to deliver groceries to a homebound saint.

Just one task. Try one small thing. You never know where God will lead you.
