We often get God twisted around wrong side up.
We see him as our rescue in our time of trouble—and he is—but if that’s our only view of him, we’re way off the mark.
There’s more to God than a desperate prayer when traffic suddenly goes awry, or when we get a medical diagnosis that devastates us.
There’s a part we must play.
God has a role for us on the stage of Christianity.
He doesn’t say, “Live how you want. I’ll pick up the pieces. Don’t worry about me until you need my help.”
God is not our janitor.
Let’s look at two places in the Bible where we can read what God expects of us.
Galatians 3:26 says:
“For in Christ Jesus you are all sons [and daughters] of God, through faith.”
Galatians 5:22-23 tells us:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
First, we learn that our faith brings us into the family of God.
“You are all the children of God by faith.”
Then, we learn how to behave as a child of God.
“Exhibit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control to everyone you meet.”
So, go ahead. Ask God for help in troubled times. Just remember, God has expectations of us, also. If we don’t do what God expects of us, how motivated will he be to come through when we make a request of him?
When we do what God asks of us, we’ve put our relationship with the Father right side up, and we can trust him to be there in our time of need.
