In 2019, two brothers in North Georgia who host a YouTube channel rebuilt a damaged Ferrari.
They detailed every step of the process, from the smallest screw to repairing cracked and chipped fender panels. They wanted the car to be perfect … a show car worthy of the public’s admiration.
They achieved their goal. When the car rolled out of their garage, the sun sparkled on the polished exterior, and no one would know the sleek beast from new.
Here’s the thing about that Ferrari: It wasn’t quite what it seemed.
The brothers hadn’t added a lick of new paint. Every patch was still there, revealing each place body filler had been added and sanded out.
What?!? How is that possible?
The secret was adding a wrap to the entire car.
Yes, a wrap, a plastic film that covers every part of the exterior and acts like temporary paint. It can last for years and be removed when you want to change the color. You can even run it through a car wash repeatedly, and it won’t come off.
It doesn’t change the mottled finish underneath, though. Under that beautiful shine is a marred surface that reveals the level of damage we’ve covered up.
Proverbs 19:5 tells us:
“A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape.”
If the brothers had tried to sell that damaged Ferrari as new (which they didn’t), they could have likely pulled it off, it looked so good. Yet, it would have been a lie. The wrap added a beautiful shine, but it didn’t change what was underneath.
Who we are is revealed when the glitter is pulled away. If our smiles are just a beautiful shine, we need to spend time correcting the flaws underneath.
We must be as we appear. No lying. No gossip. No smiling on the street, then blackballing someone behind their back.
The truth of Christ’s love is revealed in the honesty of how we live.
