Adam Takes a Detour

English Audio Version

GPS is wonderful when it works correctly.

We punch in our destination, and we are routed down this road, along that street, and past the worst obstructions.

We’re even given the option of choosing a quicker route if one becomes available.

Adam let his GPS lead him astray. He took a detour in the Garden of Eden, and God had to set him back on the right track.

First, the Bible reveals that Adam was God’s original human. Genesis 2:7 tells us:

“Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”

Next, we learn that Adam had a job to do. He wasn’t there to play. Even so, something was missing. Genesis 2:22 tells us:

“And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.”

When push came to shove, Adam chose lust over love for his Creator. Eve became more important to him than God. Genesis 3:6 tells us:

“… [Eve] took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”

Here’s what we need to see. We like to insinuate that Eve tricked Adam into transgressing God’s rules, but Adam was at her side. He knew exactly what he was doing. He chose to let his physical attraction for Eve take precedence over his loyalty to the Lord.

God had one unbreakable rule, and Adam couldn’t stay on course. He thought he could take a quicker route to his destination. Instead, God’s detour took him into the fields to labor for his food with the sweat of his brow.

Genesis 2:23 tells us:

“Therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.”

That must have been a hard lesson for Adam to learn. Did he reach his destination? Did he manage to get back on track?

We’re here, aren’t we?

Adam lived another 900 years and fathered sons and daughters. His detour legacy remains with us today.

When God gives us directions, going the way he points us leads to a better end.
