Stepping Into God’s Future

English Audio Version

What next, God, we want to know.

That’s what we ask when we feel God’s prompting evaporate.

You know what I mean. We feel God’s direction to give a huge check in the missionary offering, then the next week the water pump on the car goes out.

Then the fridge starts spitting out ice when we’re not around.

And we find a water leak in the yard … just bubbling, bubbling, bubbling.

What next, God? It becomes our cry of frustration. We gave a sizable check, and now this? God! Are you up there?

Let’s look to the shepherds when Jesus was born.

Luke 2:15 reveals a familiar situation.

“When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.’ ”

Here’s what we can take from this verse:

Revelation No. 1:

The shepherds, men of no note or importance, were visited by celestial beings of divine royalty. Think how they must have felt in that moment, how special, how connected to God.

Revelation No. 2:

Then they were abandoned. The angels went away, leaving the shepherds in the dark, surrounded by smelly, bleating sheep. The shepherds surely smelled about the same.

Revelation No. 3:

The shepherds didn’t sit around and moan about it. They said, “Let’s get up and do something.” And they did.

When bad things seem to happen to us, we’re not abandoned by God. He’s waiting on us to get up and do something.

That’s right. Call the repairman. Take a part-time job. Ask for help. Whatever fits your situation, just do something.

You'll be stepping into the future God has prepared for you.

A favorite greeting from a long-ago Christmas card says:

“May your Christmas be filled with joy and gratitude because of all that Christ has given you.”

When Christ is in our heart, we’ll live in God’s will and find joy in every part of our day.
