Our Satisfaction Is Found in God

English Audio Version

What does it take to make us happy?

That question sets our mind to running. We imagine a large home, perhaps with a gourmet kitchen and an inviting pool. We need a car that fits our new status, and travel? Absolutely. We want to see everything – in the best of accommodations, of course.

And if we pull up to a stoplight in our status car, and the one at our side is even better, suddenly ours loses much of its charm

God says to chill. Quit sucking on our envy candy. That doesn’t reflect how he wishes us to live.

Deuteronomy 5:21 gives us clear instructions:

“And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Yes, this verse means exactly what it says. Ownership is ownership. What’s not ours is not ours, and we can’t take it, not even in our thoughts.

The intent behind this verse, however, is a deep well of meaning.

If our satisfaction in life is in our elite home, our shiny automobile, and the exotic places we’ve been, we’re missing God’s mark.

Our satisfaction must be found in God.

Here are three things to think about:

Which means more to you, prayer time in the morning or getting in your early morning jog?

How do you spend your vacation time, on a mission trip or fishing at the lake?

When the offering plate comes around, do you think first of funding the church or whether you have enough left for an afternoon at the mall?

“Do not covet” sounds much the same in God’s ears as “be satisfied in me.”

Let’s turn loose of the world and hold tightly to Jesus our Lord.
