Jesus’ Chill Pill

Whoa! What’s a chill pill?

The phrase comes from the 1980’s when ADHD (attention deficit – hyperactivity disorder) was first diagnosed. The little tablet calmed things down and allowed the afflicted person to relax.

Sometimes Christians are here and there, in full “on” mode, and we can’t slow down. We might miss a soul, if we don’t witness every day. We feel the need to thump our Bible continually, and we become overwhelmed with guilt if we don’t bow our heads in prayer over every snack and meal.

Jesus says, “Chill!” Read in Mark 6:31:

“And [Jesus] said unto them, come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.”

We are to be doing the Lord’s work, certainly. However, on four hours’ sleep each night? By teaching Sunday school and leading the choir? By working a part-time job so we can fund the new sanctuary? Is that really what Jesus expects of us?

Take a vacation. Let someone else teach that class for a week or two. Chill. In Jesus’ words: “Rest a while.” That’s Jesus’ chill pill. We’re not the only one who can run the Saturday Social Calendar. Others also own lawnmowers. They can cut the grass. Choir leader? Take a week off. Youth director? Delegate some duties. Even the custodian needs some time off every now and then.

We’re expected to give ourselves fully to Christ. True. However, our Lord knew the exhaustion that comes from the human experience. We aren’t expected to be 24-hour super-Christians. When we take our chill pill and rest a while, we can focus on Jesus more clearly, and we’ll find his hand ready to give us strength and lead us forward, in his holy name.

Taking a break to recharge our energy makes us better Christians for our Lord.
