Sneaky for Jesus

English Audio Version

There are times we don’t want the enemy to know what we’re doing.

Think of it as a military operation. Do we want to post our battle plans on the Internet, maybe tell how many tanks we have, how far our rockets can fly, and what reserves we can pull in to support our objective?

It’s why football teams have huddles, rather than calling their plays over the loudspeaker system. Or we wrap gifts before showing up at a party. There are some things that are better kept in secret, so that we can achieve the end we desire.

In Judges 1:2 we read:

“And the Lord said, Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.”

Notice what the Lord didn’t say. Judah wasn’t to be audacious and flamboyant. He wasn’t to flaunt God’s missive. Although God said for him to do it, God expected him to act wisely and with due caution.

We see an example of Judah’s wisdom in Judges 1:23:

“And the house of Joseph [scouted out] Bethel.”

How do we scout? With quiet footsteps and underplayed emotion. We don’t let on what we’re doing. We keep it quiet, so our final move will be a surprise.

The children of Israel defeated their enemy because they practiced sneaky warfare. We succeed against the devil the same way. On busy days, we sneak in small prayers. We carry a pocket Bible and read a special verse at lunch. We give credit to our Lord. We’re kind to others. We find ways to help the needy. We remember that God loves us, even when it seems we’re forgotten. We pray for those who request prayer, not just say we will. We live differently, because we live for Christ.

Not so sneaky, huh? Those are pretty obvious things. We don’t need to slam the devil over the head. That’s like announcing our battle plans over the Internet. We need to huddle with Jesus, and follow his plans play-by-play. That’s the Jesus way to live for him.

When we’re shoulder to shoulder with Jesus, we’ll catch every word he says, and we’ll live like he wants us to live.
