“Get with the program, man!”
If we’ve been around awhile, we recognize that idiom. We are being told that we need to gather more information, learn what the latest updates are, and make certain we are at our highest level of proficiency. Other ways to say it are: get up to speed; be on par with our peers; knock others’ socks off; bat a thousand.
We can’t be our belly-scratching, tee shirt-wearing, Saturday-morning self any longer. It’s time to man up. We have to move past the example given us in Jude 1:7:
“Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example…”
Sodom and Gomorrah were still finding their belly buttons, thinking a good scratch was all they needed to make their world pleasant and satisfying.
God says, “Unh, uh! Get your speed slacks on, and let’s head for the stratosphere.”
What are our speed slacks? Our pressurized leggings that keep our blood from draining to our feet when we’re accelerating heavenward at light speed. For the Christian, that means Bible reading, daily prayer, and time spent with fellow believers. It means getting with the program, God’s program.
God gave us his version of the program in Genesis 1:3-4:
“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.”
We have to separate the light from the darkness, us from the world, our walk with Christ from the mud that tries to collect on our hems. We have to open the Word, gain the latest information, and get up to speed so we can bat a thousand and be on par with the saints of yore.
2 Chronicles 7:14 says it eloquently:
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
So, get with the program, man. It’s God’s thing to do.
When we follow God’s plan, we’ll ace his tests every time.
