Caulking the Cracks

Air flows two ways. In winter, it finds its way into our homes, and in summer, we do everything we can to keep the cool air inside.

We have to caulk the cracks.

Boats have an even greater problem. If the water begins to seep inside, we will eventually go under and drown.

We need skilled caulkers in our midst to help keep us watertight and impervious to the storm.

Imagine a lighthouse perched on a rock out to sea. A hurricane sweeps past, and it batters the structure. The keeper huddles inside, trusting the stone and mortar to keep out the storm.

Now imagine that lighthouse as the present-day Church of the Lord. When is our time to caulk the cracks, seal up the nooks and crannies, and make our lighthouse watertight, before or during the storm?

Revelation 22:19 tells us:

“If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.”

Our caulk is found in the Word of God. When we read the Bible each morning, we’re adding caulk to the seams of our life. When we search out truth in the scriptures, we’re keeping sin from infiltrating our days. When we sit through the teaching of the Word, we can be assured our spiritual lighthouse is stronger than it was before.

Our supreme example is found in Colossians 1:18:

“[Christ] is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”

Jesus provided us our caulk; it’s stored in the Word of God. Our ministers, Sunday school teachers, and choir directors help apply it to every crack in the fabric of our lives. Without them, our ship will sink, and we will drown when the storms come our way.

Let’s practice the lessons of Christ when times are easy so that we can survive by the lessons of Christ when times are hard.
