A Wall of Eyes

CCTV. Closed circuit television. Big Brother. The ghostly presence always looking over our shoulder. The guilt that rides us day to day.

Tune in to a British crime show, and a prevalent tool for solving many cases is to check the CCTV footage for evidence of a person’s innocence or guilt. It seems there’s nowhere a British citizen can go and not be picked up by a camera.

That’s scary to Americans, yet we deal with the same thing in a limited way. Our phone calls, our internet activity, and our credit card usage can be viewed in detail when law enforcement has a need. There are electronic eyes on us at all times.

What about the human eyes that watch us every day? Our actions, our decisions, and our responses to the problems of life are on view to everyone around us. How we live is on display. The question we must answer is whether we display Christ or we display the devil.

Hebrews 12:1 tells us:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

A spiritual life is not an easy life. Living the precepts of God on a daily basis is not simple. God’s laws fly in the face of what our human condition demands of us. We are a creation that is driven by chemical responses to outside stimuli, and to override our natural responses to the demands upon us is often very difficult.

Most people are not naturally Christ-like. We are Christ-like because we choose to walk a better path. We make a daily decision to open the Word of God and compare ourselves to the standards of Christ.

We choose to live our lives God’s way, knowing that people are watching us, and the responses we make form larger ripples than we could ever imagine. Just because we’re not on CCTV doesn’t mean the evidence of our walk with Christ goes unseen.

We have the eyes of the world on us every day, and how we live affects our tomorrow. Let’s make sure we can be proud of how we display the love of our Lord to those we meet as we journey through this life.

We show who our master is by how we choose to live every day.
