Most chefs will tell us that fat is what gives meat its flavor. A well-marbled steak will grill up succulent and tender, everything we desire, and be the crowning glory of our dinner table.
Yet, some people hate fat so much they will trim away good meat just to be sure it’s gone.
What fat do we need to cut away so that we can keep our lives pure before God?
1 Corinthians 6:10 gives us temptations we need to slice away:
“Nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”
1 Timothy 3:3 adds greed to the list:
“Not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.”
1 Timothy 3:2 cautions us to watch our morals:
“Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach…”
Galatians 5:4 says we can’t live by the letter of the law:
“You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.”
Galatians 4:10-11 warns us away from the appearance of Christian living without the substance of Christ in our lives:
“You observe days and months and seasons and years! I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain.”
Galatians 3:24-25 tells us Mosaic Law no longer applies:
“So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian…”
1 Corinthians 10:31-33 shows us the truth of righteous living in Christ:
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.”
When we cut away sin, we become lean fighting machines for the sake of the cross.
