Army of Steel

Sometimes we have no power at all. Every enemy we come against seems to consume us, overwhelming our best efforts at overcoming in the eternal name of Christ our King.

The truth is that we really do have no power at all. The power we have comes from what we put on. The power we have comes from being properly suited up to achieve the goals of our all-powerful Lord.

In a popular British science fiction series, a character who is nearly immortal and immensely powerful struggles with intergalactic foes. Rarely does he fail to pull out a fantastic solution to whatever deadly forces his enemies bring against him.

As powerful as he is, two of his enemies still can cause him to take stock of his abilities and consider running away. Both of these are similar in one way: They are encased in steel. They have been surgically altered, adapted to their new steel bodies, and made stronger in the process. Their strength is so virulent that when gathered in great numbers, the most powerful being in the universe can barely overcome their assault.

In the British television show, these steel-encased creatures are decidedly evil, but there is one lesson we can pull from them. When we encase ourselves in something stronger than we are, then we become an overcoming force that can confront any enemy we desire.

We must become an army of steel.

Ephesians 6:12 says:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood…”

If we make our shield of our talents and abilities, of our knack for financial success, or of our social skills, we will fall to the evil one.

Psalm 144:1 says:

“Blessed be the Lord, my rock…”

We are given our example in the Lord, for he is our Rock, and it is from rock that we draw the materials to create steel.

Proverbs 25:26 says:

“Like a muddied spring…is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.”

When we choose not  to stand for the laws of God, soon we will no longer be able  to stand for the laws of God; for we will flow in all directions and be good to no one.

Luke 10:27 tells the process for surgically altering our fleshly bodies and encasing ourselves in our bodies of steel:

“And [Jesus] answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

There is one more thing to keep forefront in our thoughts. When the metal enemies come against the star character in that British show, alone they are easily defeated. When banded together, they become an unstoppable force. As Christians wearing our bodies of steel, we are the same. If we try to tackle the enemy alone, we run a high risk of failure. It is when we band together with our Christian brothers that we have the power to overcome in Jesus’ name.

When we are remade to be like Jesus is when our opponent becomes frightened of us.
