Ring Around the Rosie is a childhood game that involves a group of children holding hands. In some countries they circle a central figure (the caller) who sings to them.
The circle must “fall down” when the song ends. The one who isn’t paying attention and is the last one standing is out.
In our Christian walk, God is our caller. He is at the center of our circle; he controls what we do; and our job is to hold hands, listen carefully, and react when God says to react.
Here are some instructions he calls out to us:
Rosie Call #1:
1 John 4:1. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
Just because a person says he has the “mind of God” on a matter doesn’t mean he does. Rather, we should go back to what Jesus taught, for he is our only authority.
Rosie Call #2:
Matthew 6:33. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
When we make life’s decisions in the light of how they impact our walk with the Lord, God will meet all our needs, and we will know no lack, either spiritual or physical.
Rosie Call #3:
Titus 2:1. “But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.”
Church teachings must fit with what Jesus said, not lean the way of the secular world. We find our sound doctrine in the Word of God.
Rosie Call #4:
Ephesians 5:18. “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.”
We can be wild and crazy, and we can party down, but our motivation must be the Spirit and not alcoholic spirits. In the Spirit, we give him control. With spirits, we lose control.
Rosie Call #5:
Romans 13:8. “Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.”
Many people consider this verse to address only the matter of money. However, we should also consider the moral and societal debts we ring up. When we “owe” someone a personal debt (sometimes called a favor) and they call it in, we may find ourselves compromised. We cannot afford to let the world’s demands stain our Christian purity.
Ring Around the Rosie. If we dance around an empty circle, how will we find a fair caller? It is when we dance around Jesus that we know just when to fall down.
Let’s make him the center of our lives.
When Jesus calls out “All fall down,” we are wise to be listening.
