We talk of dogpiles, that fun-loving and raucous juvenile activity where we all choose someone to pile on, catching the unwary victim at the very bottom of the heap.
Even to read the words makes our pulse race, especially if our name is the one called out.
“Dogpile on Kevin!”
What? What? No, not me! We look around desperately, but it’s already too late. Down we go, at the bottom of the pile, unable to get free.
The lucky guy with the loud voice? He’s up above, of course. He’s on top of the heap, the king of the mountain, so to speak, although that’s a different game, entirely.
It’s where we want to be, though, and we struggle free; and with arms and legs thrashing, we clamber after the madman who brought us down.
We want to be top dog, on the top of the pile, the king of the mountain. We want to be where he is, and we want him under our feet.
How many of us try to do that in our Christian walk? Perhaps even with God…
No, we cry! Never! Yet, when God prompts us as the offering plate comes by, we push his voice into the background… When we see a family stranded at the side of the road, we drive on by… When we come to the sign-up table for summer camp sponsors, we hurry past…
I want to be on top! It’s my way or the highway! Top dog! I’m top dog, and I get to do it my way!
And God reminds us:
Top Dog Fact #1 –
Revelation 1:8. “I am the Alpha and the Omega…who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Top Dog Fact #2 –
Revelation 3:3. “Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.”
Top Dog Fact #3 –
Revelation 5:14. “And the four living creatures said, ‘Amen!’ and the elders fell down and worshiped.”
God loves us. He says so in John 3:16. However, he is the king of the hill. In the dogpile, he’s always the one on top. He is the supreme Creator of the universe, and he always has the last word.
When we realize who God is, we won’t spend so much time trying to take control.
