Kick Out the Devil

Sometimes a boot is the best thing we can own. We need to think of the Texas style, the long-throated, jean-draped, pointy-toed boot that is durable for all occasions, from slipping easily into a saddle’s stirrup to crushing scorpions crawling from under a rock.

Why a Texas boot? That pointy toe is perfect for kicking out the devil when he tries to find a comfy corner in our home.

The devil will come to us in many forms. His presence is recorded over and over in the Bible. God’s overcoming presence is also recorded kicking the devil out of people’s lives. Let’s look at one example recorded in the Word:

Matthew 8:28 describes two demon-possessed men in the country of the Gedarenes who lived in the tombs. They were so filled with the devil no one could pass that way.

When we let the devil have total reign in our life, he will twist us beyond any resemblance to the God after which we are modeled. We become a hindrance to those who come into contact with us.

Matthew 8:29 gives us the response of these demon-possessed men when they recognized the holy Son of God: “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”

When the evil one meets with the Holy One, there is always a clash. That is why there is so much opposition between the world and the church. It is evil against the good that comes from our heavenly Father.

What is the answer? James 2:19 gives us a pretty good response. This verse tells us that we do well when we believe upon the Lord, for even the demons believe and shudder at his mighty presence.

Even so, we must understand that belief is not enough. Even the demons have that. We must also come to the cross and offer ourselves unto the Christ and let him take control of our lives. Jesus is the glory come to replace the evil of this world in our hearts and souls. All we have to do is come to him.

That beloved verse, John 3:16, tells us the secret: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

When we kick out the devil, we must replace him with the Christ. Then and only then there will be no room for the evil one to make his home in us ever again.

That story of the demon-possessed men in Matthew? In Verse 32, Jesus booted those demons out with one word: “Go,” sending them into a herd of pigs.

Jesus had no sympathy for the evil infestation that had taken over those two men’s lives. We should have no sympathy for the devil, either.

There is no need to be kind to the devil. We must boot him out of our life no matter how much it hurts him.
