Life in the Darkness

An unusual hunter lives in Asia. It is the Rickett’s bat. It not only catches fish, it does it in the dark.

The darkness is what makes the bat excel at what it does. In the light the fish would dive for protection, and the bats’ grab for food would be foiled.

However, the bat has a secret weapon. It is echolocation. The bat listens to find its food.

Life walking with God is often the same. Like the bat, we sometimes feel we are searching in the darkness for the answers we seek. It’s not fair, we cry. We want God to illuminate our every footstep, to light our way, and to shine with his eternal glory.

However, God sometimes has a different way. Rather than shine a spotlight on our goal, he wants us to do something simpler.

God wants us to listen.

Listen to what, we ask. That’s simple. Listen to his still small voice. Listen to our hearts, our conscience, the needs of those around us, or maybe just to the neighbor who needs to talk.

Mark 4:24 encourages us to pay attention to what we hear, for if we listen, then we will find our answers.

Revelation 3:20 tells us that if we hear God’s voice, he will come to us and share our life.

John 10:27-28 says it best of all: My sheep hear my voice, and I will give them eternal life.

God wants us to listen, and when we do, we will find the spiritual sustenance we need to survive our walk through this life. We don’t need to walk in the brilliance of midday to find God’s will for us. We only need to open our ears.

Remember the Rickett’s bat. It cannot hunt during the day. It has learned to listen in the night.

God is wherever we are, whether the sun shines on our path, or we walk through the shadows. It is in listening to him that we find the route he wishes us to walk.

Excerpt of the Day

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
