The Season rolls around once a year.
We know it’s coming when the turkey legs of Thanksgiving are bared to bone and tummies are stuffed with more treats than are good for us.
It’s a season of excess, parties at work, weekends at the mall, and searching, searching for a new place to hide the latest wrapped package so not even the most inquisitive little elf can find our Christmas gifts.
There are other gifts we don’t think of as Christmas presents, yet they connect to the season more than any other.
After all, what’s the Season all about, the gifts we find under the tree? Or the One who came to gift us with redemption so that we could be free?
What gifts do we receive from Christ throughout the year? The good ones, the gifts that enrich our days in March, June, and September?
Ephesians 4:11 begins to unwrap the Christ package:
“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers …”
These are gifts given to the church. Why? The passage goes on to tell us they are given to us to equip the saints for the work of the ministry and to build up the body of Christ. (Eph. 4:12)
Established Christian elders in the church? Wrapped up and tied with a bow, especially for us.
Those who give an utterance in tongues? Under the tree, ready for us to enjoy.
A visiting minister? Straight off the sleigh.
The church board members? We giggle with anticipation.
Sunday school teachers? Christmas cookies, a sweet treat we can’t pass up.
We have Christmas in our pockets, you Scrooges and Christmas fanatics alike, and we carry it with us all year long. Let’s pull it out and celebrate, in March, June, and September!
We don’t have to wait for Christmas to celebrate the best gift the world has ever known, Christ and the salvation he offers unto us.
