All in Good Company

Good company. Friendship. Camaraderie. Being around people we enjoy, those we have something in common with.

We tend to gravitate to those who share similar interests with us. It gives us a way to connect. Hunters can discuss the latest weaponry on the market. Those in the medical field can share cutting edge health breakthroughs. Teachers might regale each other with stories from their classrooms.

What do Christians have in common? We come from all professions, covering a wide range of skills and income levels. There has to be a catalyst to bind us together.

We find our camaraderie in the Word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 says we share our training manual:

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

2 Thessalonians 3:10 places the same work ethic upon every believer:

“For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”

Proverbs 22:6 makes us all educators:

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

1 Peter 2:17 sets up attitudes we should have in common:

“Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”

James 1:5 ensures we each have access to the wisdom of God:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

Titus 1:2 gives us a common focus:

“In hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began…”

1 Timothy 5:8 deals out our shared responsibilities:

“But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

1 Timothy 2:1-2 encourages common prayers, so that we may be in unison in our goals:

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”

Philippians 2:4 commands us to look at our fellow believers as brothers and sisters:

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

Galatians 2:10 reminds us that life isn’t just about me, myself, and I:

“Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.”

Christians need to spend time with other Christians. Our Christian walk is truly successful only when we surround ourselves with good company, those we enjoy spending time with. We need to walk in friendship and camaraderie with people who believe in Christ as we do. When we do, we are in good company, indeed. We will find our spiritual support in those with common beliefs in the cross and in Christ our King.

The strength we find in Christ on Sunday often flows from the saints we fellowship with on Monday.
