A Future and a Hope

We recognize Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic quote:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

The core of King’s words is that our future must not only be different, but better than our today. We need to strive towards an improved tomorrow, one in which we work to solve today’s problems.

Another King quote we may be less familiar with:

“Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals.”

So, how do we reach our future, science or religion? Let’s look at Proverbs 16:3:

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

This passage means all work: the Church; personal; business; science; politics; all of it.

When we place our future in God’s hands, he will order our footsteps. When we step forward—and that means it does take intent and action on our part—God will give us success. We find this promise reinforced in Jeremiah 29:11:

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Our future can be filled with confidence when our value system is encapsulated in Christ. Luke 12:32 is our encouragement:

“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. said science and religion are not rivals. We can go further than that. God’s Word in Isaiah 55:8-9 says God’s mind is unlimited. He understands science, even as man attempts to discover the meanings of the universe through science.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Mankind uses science to build towards a better future. Our hope for that future comes through God when we allow him to direct our path.

Philippians 1:6 tells us God will bring everything together, both science and religion, to culminate in our ultimate perfection in Christ:

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

Science doesn’t conflict with God. After all, he created it as part of his grand and glorious plan for our future.
