4 Honors Revealing Hope from the Book of Psalms

How do we honor someone?

Several decades ago, a Fort Worth, Texas, hometown son rode NASA’s Apollo 12 rocket into space and successfully returned. The city wanted to recognize Alan Bean and his fellow astronauts, Pete Conrad and Richard Gordon, in the best way possible.

Fort Worth honored their homegrown spaceman with a ticker tape parade through the downtown streets, with people lining the sidewalks, bands playing, and a military escort. Strands of ticker tape fluttered from office windows reaching into the sky.

The streets were a mess. The paper covered the curbs and filled the convertibles carrying the astronauts. Yet, the people who had gathered to celebrate their hometown son felt nothing but joy, even as the street sweepers rolled down the avenues to collect the residue left behind.

We receive similar honors when we place our hope in God.

Here are 4 Honors Revealing Hope from the Book of Psalms.

Psalm 3:2-6 (ESV) tells us:

“Many are saying of my soul, ‘There is no salvation for him in God.’ But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill. I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around.”

Honor No. 1: You, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.

Jesus is our hope of protection. He honors us with his shield of safety and security whatever comes our way.

Honor No. 2: I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.

Jesus is our hope of rescue. He honors us by being there in our need, in responding to our prayers, and never leaving our side.

Honor No. 3: I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.

Jesus is our hope of renewal. Even when we are oppressed with the cares of living, and it seems we cannot face another day, he honors us with the newness and freshness of the morning.

Honor No. 4: I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me.

Jesus is our hope in the storm. Whatever batters us, he honors us with the assurance that we are never alone in our struggle to achieve what he desires us to become.

You are God’s tickertape homegrown child, the son or daughter of salvation, and worth the mess you might sometimes leave behind. God wants to honor you, and he does so by providing you the hope that he is with you in every situation.

Glory in God’s love for you. His protection and honor are your birthright in him.
