King David of the Old Testament was a world-class man.
He went from a shepherd to a king, reigned for nearly 40 years, and unified Israel. He brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and established the city as the capital and religious center of Israel. He was even in the bloodline of Jesus.
David could have built monuments to his feats in battle, to the people he’d overthrown, and the changes he’d brought forth in the lives of his people. David could have written his story any way he wished, and his constituents would have fallen at his feet and worshipped him.
Instead, we read David’s glorious cry, given at the end of his reign, in 2 Samuel 22:18:
“[God] delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them who hated me: for they were too strong for me.”
This king, who brought down a giant as a boy, and who killed a lion and a bear with his bare hands? His enemies were too strong for him? He became the king of a mighty nation. How could any enemy be too strong for David?
David saw that his strength came from God. All his feats of prowess flowed from a higher power, and without the Father, David would have died a shepherd tending sheep in the field. David understood what was most important: God.
When we let Jesus come first, the power of Christ will flow through everything we do.
