The silence of winter is one of the most profound environments we can know. Snow blankets the land, and all is muzzled. No crickets chirrup. No leaves rustle. Not a bird sings in the sky. Even the air seems to hush its voice as a blanket of stillness falls across the land.
Some call it peaceful, and it is. No squirrels chatter in the trees. The wild creatures are bundled in their dens. Even the waters in the stream are frozen into their icy beds.
The world is snowbound, captured by the season, and unable to do anything but hunker down and wait for the warmth of spring.
Yet this snowbound world is a catalyst for the most exciting of winter’s sports, extreme skiing. It is fun and dangerous, bringing us to the edge of what is possible in the winter environment.
Who are we in our Christian walk? Have we become snowbound Christians, silenced, our witness stilled, bundled in our homes, and hunkered down doing little more than waiting for a spiritual spring?
1 John 4:3-4 gives us four truths that we must be aware of:
Truth #1:
We are to sing out Christ’s name, if we wish to be acknowledged by God.
Truth #2:
If we let a season of hardship silence our voices, we deny the cross, inviting the spirit of the antichrist into our lives.
Truth #3:
If we hold to the cross, we can know that we are the children of the almighty God.
Truth #4:
Jesus is greater than the devil. If Jesus lives in us, we become greater than the devil.
When we find ourselves spiritually snowbound, we must break out our extreme skiing equipment (our Bible and our prayer groups) because only then will we find fulfillment in the power of the cross.
When we are silenced by our situation, we deny the power of Christ. When we break out our extreme gear, we can tackle the world once again.
