In September of 2001, the Twin Towers in New York City came crashing to the ground.
Were the acts of that September a religious jihad, or a deliberate attack of Satan to undermine America’s faith?
First, let’s see what the Word of God has to say about the incredible events that took place on that devastating day:
John 8:44: Those who do evil are of the devil.
The Jews had once again raised their voices against Jesus, trying to trick him with their words. He tells them they are of the devil, who is a murderer from the beginning; they are children of a father who has no truth in him, for he is the father of liars.
Matthew 5:38-39: We are to love those who have done us evil.
The multitudes had followed Jesus, but he speaks his message to his disciples alone: The world is told, an eye for an eye, but I say to turn the other cheek. Do not resist those who bring evil to your door.
Psalm 18:17-18: God will discipline those who strike terror into our hearts.
David was at a low point in his life. His enemies had brought him down, and he quaked in fear. Yet, in his prayers he recognized that God hears the cry of the afflicted; he strengthens their hearts; and he will bring justice, so that those who strike at us with terror will be defeated.
Second, we can find our assurance in the Word that we can trust in our Father. Let’s look at two passages that confirm his protecting power:
Psalm 91:5: We do not have to fear terror.
Neither spiritual darkness nor deliberate attempts by the devil can wrest God’s peace from our hearts. When evil seems to come our way, we cannot let our trust in our Lord slip from our grasp.
Isaiah 54:14: Our strength comes from righteousness through him.
The prophet tells us that in our righteousness, we are established in God. He will not allow terrorism or the fear it brings to bother us.
The terrorists of 2001 struck at the heart of American’s strength and pride. The devil will strike at the core of our spiritual foundations. Jesus makes the difference in whether we continue to stand strong or crumble under the onslaught.
Our rock is Jesus, and when we claim his righteousness, not even the devil can shake us free.
