A Treasure Hunt

X marks the spot.

What is it that we love about a good treasure hunt? Is it the prize that drives people to spend fortunes in the search, or is it the search, itself?

In the Scriptures we are told that the greatest treasure we can seek is wisdom. Even Solomon chose wisdom above all other treasures, and he was the greatest of the ancient kings.

Proverbs 8:32-36 gives us five keys to finding the most valuable treasure we can ever seek.

1st Key: We are to keep the ways of the Lord.

There are two ways we can go in life. We can choose the way of the Lord, or we can choose the way of man.

God calls us his children, and he says he will bless us if we keep his ways.

2nd Key: We are to learn from God.

We sometimes have a strong sense of opinion, and it is often difficult to listen to others. We want others to agree with us, for we feel we are right.

God teaches us differently, and if we are wise, we will listen and learn from him.

3rd Key: We are to wait upon the Lord.

Time seems to fly for humanity. For the very young, a short time of waiting seems an eternity. For the elderly, time disappears too quickly, and waiting seems foolish.

God’s timing is his own. He wants us to be ready when he reaches out his hand. Then wisdom will be ours.

4th Key: We are to find our life in God.

The devil offers a sort of life, one that is carnal and filled with pleasures. However, the devil’s life is for a short season and leads to death.

God offers us life everlasting, and when we turn to him, he will gather us into his arms.

5th Key: We are to use the Word of God as our measuring stick to judge our favor in God’s eyes.

The world cannot decide on what defines success. Some think it is wealth, fame, good deeds, or self-sacrifice. Others proclaim the merits of good parenting or political involvement.

The Christian’s measure of success is marked by how he or she stands up against the Bible. If we obey its instructions, we love God. If we ignore its instructions, we have sinned against God.

We have reached the X when we reach for God’s Word. When we open God’s Word, we have the source of wisdom in our hands.
