We can needle someone (goad them into action), needle something (add ether or alcohol), or give someone the needle (heckle them to the point of irritation).
A needle can also be used to make stitches in cloth, or be used as a medical instrument to administer a drug or medicine.
How can pride be a needle?
When we let anything, no matter how good, erode the support of Christ, we wind up precariously balanced on the Needle of Pride. All it takes is the slightest wind of trouble to push us right off. Even our salvation can put us on the tip of that needle, if we do not maintain our trust in Christ.
Let’s look at how salvation can lead us to the Needle of Pride, if our confidence is not in God.
Step #1: We wait upon the Lord.
Genesis 49:18 reveals the words of Jacob at the end of his life. He says, “I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord.”
When we wait (entwine our spirits with) the Lord, he draws us unto him.
Step #2: God comes to our rescue.
In Exodus 14:13, Moses reminds the people that God has destroyed the Egyptians, and they will be seen no more.
God’s heart is moved by our need for him, and he comes to us in strength and power.
Step #3: We learn to trust in Christ.
We read in Exodus 15:2 of the joy of Israel, for they exalt in the Father, recognizing him as their rescuing redeemer.
We give all glory to the One who saves us from the destroyer, for it is by him that all things are done.
Step #4: Our blessings become more important than our salvation.
God blesses Israel with the fat of the land, but in Deuteronomy 32:15, Israel (Jeshurun) abandons God, trusting in material blessings rather than in the one who gave them.
When we lift ourselves up, we become balanced on the Needle of Pride, and we will soon come crashing down.
When we allow ourselves to be lifted up, we must make sure we are held securely in the hands of the Father.
