Steel Spine Christianity

Have you ever seen someone who’s had a broken back, and they’ve had to have multiple vertebrae fused? Maybe they’ve got a steel rod down their spine, and they can no longer twist and turn to look to the side or behind them.

We wouldn’t wish that on anyone in the flesh. But in the spirit, that’s exactly what God wants to do for us. He wants to open us up, implant a steel rod in our lives, and give us the backbone to always face forward, without looking to the side or behind us. He wants to fuse our vertebrae forever facing him so that there is no thought of turning away from his mercy and grace.

Let’s see what God’s Word says about walking in his Steel Spine Christianity:

Acts 2:38 is our surgical operation:

“And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’ ”

Revelation 12:11 is the surgeon’s guarantee of success:

“And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.”

James 1:5 tells us God is on call if we stumble:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

Titus 2:4 says the plan is for everyone:

“And so train the young women to love their husbands and children.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 is our billboard ad that invites others to God’s surgery:

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

Sure, our steel spine and our fused vertebrae limit our motion. We can’t turn aside to see every distraction of the devil, and that’s a good thing. We also can’t look back at the life we left behind. We must face forward, and that’s well and good, because that’s where Jesus will be found.

Jesus is ahead; let’s not look any other direction.
