Life is what we make it, isn’t it? If life gives us lemons, all we have to do is make lemonade. We can pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, if only we want to.
We see a new baby, our heart yearns for one of our own, and we contact the adoption agency. Our house is cramped, so we call up our realtor, asking to tour a new one. Holiday coming? Put up the tree so that we feel festive and seasonal.
Sometimes, though, trying too hard causes us to stumble. We want our children to be successful, so we drive them hard at school. That new job gives us money to travel, but it means we have no time to get away.
It’s like that old game show Let’s Make a Deal. We always feel there’s something better, so we go for what’s behind Curtain Number Three, only to find we’ve traded away something precious for something worth nothing at all.
In Acts 2:23, Luke draws the curtain back and shows the Jews exactly what trade they’ve made. They had the Promise come to life in their very presence; Jesus the Redeemer walking in their streets; the Great Messiah offering them redemption and a way back to God.
However, they traded it all away. Behind Curtain Number Three we see Jesus crucified and slain, cast aside as a wastrel, a cipher among criminals.
Yet, life is what we make it. Isn’t it? Are we still waiting for Curtain Number Three? Have we been willing to cast Jesus to the side, hoping for something better? Or are we ready to take him at his word, and accept him into our hearts?
Our life is indeed what we make it. Jesus is behind every curtain, if we only look for him there.
Finding Jesus is simple. All we need to do is close our eyes in prayer. He will meet us every time.
