The Tripwire

English Audio Version

Merriam-Webster offers us a clear understanding of what a tripwire does and how it works. A tripwire has four properties.

  1. It’s placed low in a concealed location.
  2. It’s used especially in warfare.
  3. It’s designed to bring down our enemy.
  4. It brings a deadly result our way.

Christians are rarely defeated by the big things. We don’t go out looking for someone to kill or a country to overthrow. Overnight debauchery isn’t usually our path to destruction.

It’s the little things that trip us up and send us down the wider road to destruction. It’s the tripwire we stumble over that brings us to a bad end.

Sadly, it’s often something we do to ourselves.

James 1:14 reveals the hidden truth.

“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.”

Our tripwire is the thing we haven’t turned over to God. We still want it, even though God has told us no. We must remember we are at war with the darkness. Our enemy wants us to stumble and fall. Our only way through is to let Christ be our light to lead us out of the shadows and into the light.

Jesus will banish all distraction, and he will lead us to victory.
