God’s Grace and Forgiveness

We are human.

We will stumble and sin, yet God says our weaknesses are his opportunity to provide us his strength and guidance.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NIV) is his promise of divine grace and forgiveness:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

This passage is chock full of truths, so let’s break them down.

Truth No. 1:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’”

His grace is his mercy. Compassion, forgiveness, and sympathy also serve to express what this means to us. Whichever word you choose, it means there is more than enough flowing from his hand unto us.

Why does he provide such a plethora of compassion and forgiveness? Because it is when we are weakest that we are enabled to truly appreciate the power his redemptive nature and his forgiveness enables in us.

Truth No. 2:

“Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

When we hide our weaknesses, we hamstring Christ’s ability to work through us in ministry to the broken world around us. When they see only our perfection, what we have to offer in Christ is unapproachable to them. Christ’s power rests in us when the people around us are empowered to respond to his saving power.

Truth No. 3:

“I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

When we stand in our own strength, we minimize the power of Christ to transform and revitalize our life. When we stumble and Christ lifts us up, he receives all the praise. When Christ is proclaimed to the world as our savior and redemption, we can do greater and greater works for him.

We will stumble. It is Christ who lifts us up. When we give him the glory, we become stronger in him.

Let’s lift Christ up today.
