Who would yell “Fire!” in a crowded theater, especially if no such fire existed? A person would have to be a fool to do such a thing.
However, it happens all the time. We make a comment about a coworker before we know the full story. We tell our children in anger that they will amount to nothing. We worry that our finances will collapse around us, even though we hold a steady job.
All of these are ways of yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater. They create dissention and undermine people’s confidence. Sometimes the confidence that collapses is our own.
In 600 B.C. the world was no different. False prophets ran about like foxes in the desert, telling the people anything they wanted to hear, for no other reason than to earn money or prestige. They even attached the phrase “The Lord says” to their words, when God had done no such thing.
These false prophets were leading the people into dangerous situations, where the only thing that waited was spiritual death.
Ezekiel 13:13 gives us God’s response to those fools yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater. Ezekiel tells us God's anger will come upon them as a mighty wind; rains will flood the ground upon which they walk; and great hailstones will decimate them.
This verse reflects God’s true feelings about those who spread false witness. It stirs him to fury, and he will stop at nothing to bring the false prophets to their knees.
God is the essence of Truth, and he expects us to reflect him to the world. Let’s make sure our words do so.
