Checking Our Boots at the Door

English Audio Version

Our boots are emblematic of our lives.

When we travel enough of life, stuff begins to stick to us.

  • The demands of our job, and expectations that don’t quite fit Jesus’ example of kindness and fair play.
  • Our family situation that tempts us to bolt and run, leaving our responsibilities behind.
  • The stress of the daily grind and our need for some sort of release, even when it involves harmful substances.

Then we show up at church wearing the same boots that have covered our feet all week. Do we even notice how filthy they are?

Jesus says, “I love you. Check your boots at the door. I want you to come into my presence clean and pure.”

Is it really that easy to toss off the bad behaviors, the disgusted attitude, and the deeds we’ve done?

Here’s what Jeremiah 31:34 tells us:

“… For I will forgive [your] iniquity, and I will remember [your] sin no more.”

Looking on down, Jeremiah 33:8 says:

“I will cleanse [you] from all the guilt of [your] sin against me, and I will forgive all the guilt of [your] sin and rebellion against me.”

We ask if it’s really that easy … whether we can just check our boots at the door.

It seems so.

Look at what 1 John 2:12 has to say:

“I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake.”

No one’s making this up. These nuggets of truth come directly from the Word of God.

Move on to Isaiah 43:25 to grab the horns of God’s love.

“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.”

Did you get that? God forgets your stained and tattered boots are even outside the door.

1 John 1:7 is the treasure you need to carry with you today.

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

When we remove our boots and check them at the door, we begin to walk in the light of Jesus’ love. We are cleansed from the muck we’ve walked through, and we become pure in him.

Jesus is our clean-up man when we invite him into our lives.

Excerpt of the Day

We already know the end of the story. Jesus rules, and the devil drools.
