Warning Signs

Fables and fairy tales are told for a reason. We’ve a lesson to learn, and the story makes us listen, even when we’re inclined to disregard the advice.

Little Red Riding Hood tells us not to trust strangers.

Androcles and the Lion? Even a small kindness can bring great rewards.

The Three Little Pigs suggests we need to be sure of our fortifications.

These are warning signs that bad things can happen if we don’t pay attention to what’s happening around us. The Bible gives us warning after warning. One of the direst is found in Proverbs 1:25:

“But you have set at nought all my counsel, and would [listen to] none of my reproof.”

That’s God speaking. His is the voice of wisdom, and his words are empowered with truth. When the Father raises the caution sign, he does so for a reason. We’re about to be eaten by a wolf. It’s time for us to run.

Then, to make sure we really get it, God repeats himself in Proverbs 1:30:

“They would [have] none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.”

This verse is almost identical to the first. What’s God saying in these two passages? If we will listen, he’ll pour out his Spirit on us (Verse 23). However, if we choose to ignore his reproof, he’ll laugh at our problems (Verse 26), refuse to answer us (Verse 28), and allow us to go our own way (Verse 31).

If we listen to God’s warning signs, we’ll dwell in safety and have no fear of the world (Verse 33).

When we trust in ourselves, we will fail utterly. In God, we’ll know the ecstasy of success in Christ.

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
