A generation is defined as the average length of time between the births of parents and their children. In modern terms, that comes to about thirty years.
For those of us over thirty, think about the changes that have taken place in our lifetimes. Many are fantastic. Hybrid cars, mobile devices, and online banking. Others, not so much: Internet bullying, lax moral standards, and intrusive video surveillance.
For those of us under thirty, we can’t afford to hold too tightly to what we know. Everything is in transition, and by the time we become the elder generation, the world will have changed around us.
How do we want our generation to be known? What does God decry in our generation?
Proverbs 30:11 tells us there will be a generation that curses their father and does not bless their mother.
In November 2004 college student Chris Porco was convicted of killing his father and brutally disfiguring his mother with an ax. Somewhere, respect for his mother and father were left by the roadside.
Proverbs 30:12 decries the generation that is clean in their own eyes, and yet they wallow in the filth of the world.
The latest Hollywood trend is for actors to “come out” of the closet. Reality shows flaunt promiscuous coupling. Profanity on prime time has become normal. America’s morality has become compromised as the “new standard.”
Proverbs 30:13 speaks to a generation that looks down on others, even as they are filled with vanity and pride.
As actress Lindsay Lohan fell from the pinnacle of stardom, she snubbed court-ordered rehab appointments, made obscene hand gestures in court, and allegedly lied to the police. She typified the worst our society tolerates from its Hollywood darlings.
Proverbs 30:14 describes a generation whose teeth cut like swords, who have knives for jaw teeth, and who devour the poor from the face of the earth.
Energy giant Enron filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Shareholders lost more than $1 billion. Retirees had their stock portfolios wiped clean. Company CEO Kenneth Lay was convicted of multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy. The many others, often at the opposite end of the financial spectrum, who suffered irreparable harm due to one man’s greed, we will never know.
Proverbs 30:32 gives us the solution in order to redeem the generation in which we live. If we have unwisely become proud, or have let our thoughts become impure, all we have to do is confess our sins to the Lord, and he will be just to forgive us. Then we will become an upright and clean generation, an example to all who come after us.
The world around us is constantly in change. Let’s invite God into our lives, for he will change our world for the better.
