Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

The thumb is a very useful part of the human body. Not only does it allow us to grasp a soda can, without it, we cannot drive a screw into a board.

Try tying a shoelace with only our eight fingers. It can be done, but only with great difficulty.

One of the easiest uses of our thumbs is to show our approval or disapproval. Thumbs up. Thumbs down. We approve. We disapprove. Go for it! Hold your horses. Buy it. Sell it. Yea. Nay.

Thumbs up. Thumbs down. No one can mistake our message.

God gives us plenty of thumbs up in the Bible. Love our neighbors as ourselves. Honor our parents. Meet together regularly. Share with those in need. There are a hundred others.

However, there are things God gives a clear thumbs down to. Those are just as much a part of his Word as his votes of approval.

Let’s look at five of God’s thumbs down selections:

Thumbs Down #1:

Proverbs 12:22 says thumbs down to lying lips.

Thumbs Down #2:

1 John 2:4 tells us if we do not keep his commandments, we do not know him.

Thumbs Down #3:

Romans 6:23 makes it clear if we sin, we have earned death.

Thumbs Down #4:

Isaiah 1:13 requires our praise to be honest and sincere. God abhors any other kind.

Thumbs Down #5:

Galatians 5:19-21 gives us an exhaustive list of things which will separate us and the kingdom of God, covering immorality; to idolatry, strife, and envy; and nearly a dozen more. If we want to truly follow Jesus, we must abandon these thumbs-down behaviors.

Our God is a being of love, and he truly treasures his children. There is no good thing he wishes to withhold. However, he has a thumb, and he does not hesitate to let us know when we have crossed the line. When we see his thumb pointing down, we need to make sure we cross right back over to the side of Jesus and righteous living in his name.

Then his thumb will change, and he will shoot us a sign of his approval.

When we pay attention to God, he will keep us on the path to him.
