The Crafter of the Winds

The wind is one of the fiercest forces on the planet earth. A tornado can reach speeds of hundreds of miles per hour, ripping even the asphalt from city streets. A hurricane can wrestle the ocean from its foundations and fling it onto the land.

When we realize that we serve the one who controls the very winds in the sky, we catch only the barest glimpse of he who is the glory of all creation, great God Jehovah, the Crafter of all that exists in the heavens and on the earth.

In Jeremiah 49, we read of the mighty strength that can be seen in the simple flexing of Jehovah’s arm. Elam was a mighty land, once under control of the Persians. Yet, it could not stand against the glory of the almighty God. Verse 36 conjures up the power of the storm when it says:

“I will bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and I will scatter [Elam] unto all lands.”

This is the God of the tornado and the Master of the hurricane speaking. Elam has no choice but to lay down her arms and surrender, or be destroyed before the eyes of the whole world.

When God comes before us with his thunder and his glory, what do we do? We have two choices before us:

Choice 1: We can fall upon our face and plead for the mercy of the God who rules all creation.

Choice 2: We can be defeated, and we will be scattered as far as the four winds are from each other.

Elam made the wrong choice. She fought against the word of the Lord, and she was sorely defeated. Her people were scattered to the farthest reaches, even unto the ends of the earth.

Do we give in when God approaches, or do we ignore his appeals? This is Jehovah, the Begetter of all life and the Ruler of all creation. He is the tornado and the hurricane. We ignore him at our peril

The closer we are to God, the greater the chance that we will survive the storm.

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
