Many people claim knowledge in many areas.
Scientists claim knowledge of the stars, even predicting the end of the Universe.
Geneticists argue that they can rewrite genetic code, making us into a better race.
Teachers know better how to teach.
Parents understand their children more deeply than anyone else.
Even your local mechanic doesn’t need your input. He can listen and diagnose your car without your suggestions.
Yet, what do these people really know? Everything . . . or just a portion of the total knowledge out there?
Let’s see what 1 John 4:7-8 says about knowing God:
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
Go ahead and study the scriptures. Learn the Word and be able to quote it back. Even learn to read it in the original Greek and Hebrew . . . and you will be kidding yourself if you think you have learned everything there is about God.
Let’s look back at this passage from the book of 1 John.
“Anyone who does not love does not know God.”
There’s nothing wrong with studying the Bible in four languages, in twelve different translations, or taking a college course to understand what the Bible’s authors intended in the context of when the Bible was written.
Here’s the thing. None of that really teaches you about God if you don’t get what God is all about.
Love. That’s it. We must learn it, infuse it into our lives, and act it out with other people.
How? Be kind. Offer to help others. Spend time with people, even when your life is in a rush.
Then and only then you can begin to say you know who God really is.
Let’s get enough of God into us, so that he can spill over into the world.
