What gets people to a good Christmas party?
Finger sandwiches and elevator music?
I DON’T THINK SO!
We need to liven things up if we want to get a lot of RSVPs.
If we want our home filled, our living room glittering with beautifully wrapped gifts, our den overflowing with funny stories, we must give people a reason to show up!
Cue the lights, camera, ACTION!
We need to string all the Christmas lights, hire the top-name chefs, and schedule in live music. A band, vocals, even a DJ is a good addition.
Create something special, and people won’t be able to stay away.
How does that work with our Christian witness? How do we draw people to Christ?
A rolling pin? Beat them over the head with a good verse or two?
Maybe a baseball bat … hit our condemnation of their lifestyles out of the park.
Nah! There’s a better way. Read Luke 10:27.
“And [Jesus] answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
What? We don’t have to hire a band, cover the cost of the caterer, pay the electric bill for a yard full of lights?
Those things don’t hurt, but no, they aren’t necessary. It’s much simpler.
1. We love God with every bit of who we are, including our time and finances.
2. We love our neighbor as much as we love us, treating them in the same way as when we splurge on ourselves.
Do this, and come December 25, you’ll be rocking the best Christmas you ever.
Let’s get to it. Loving others is God’s way, which makes it the only way.
