It’s easy to say, “If … then.”
If you behave in this certain way, then I’ll feel that way toward you.
In other words, if you measure up, I’ll give you my love.
That’s not the Christian way.
Romans 12:9-10 tells us:
“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”
Let’s go one step further. This passage is titled in the English Standard Version as Marks of the True Christian.
So, what are the marks of the true Christian? Let’s list them.
1. Our love, concern, and interest in others must be genuine.
2. We must genuinely hate and avoid evil.
3. We must cling to good living like our life depends on it.
4. We must have affection for our fellow believers.
5. We must go out of our way to honor those who fellowship with us.
If we’re not doing these things, how are we different from the world?
Let’s show our true selves, and let’s do it with love.
