Obsolescence is America’s mantra.
Make it new for the new season. It’s the only way to sell.
If it looks or feels like yesterday, who’ll be interested? Who wants to wear last year’s styles, drive last year’s car, or live in a house that looks like the last decade?
Recently a YouTuber showcased a car brought into his shop to be repaired, a black Porsche 911 only a couple of years old and in pristine shape … except for a slight dimple in the back bumper.
The gleaming beauty was in for an upgrade.
The owner wanted the rear of his car upgraded to the newest look, with new taillights, new rear grilles, and the latest style of bumper.
Most people wouldn’t know the difference, but to the car’s owner, it was all the difference in the world. His car had become obsolete, and he wanted an upgrade, even if just in his own eyes.
God says we are never obsolete. Getting older is getting better. Even in our gray hair, we have a vital role to play.
Titus 2:1-5 tells us how we continue to fit into God’s plan as we mature.
“But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.”
That’s a long passage, so let’s break it into manageable segments.
Men are to be:
- Sober-minded
- Dignified
- Self-controlled
- Sound in faith and love
- Steadfast
Women are to be:
- Reverent
- Not slanderers
- Not slaves to much wine
- Teaching what is good
- Training young women to a better standard
It sounds like our work isn’t done. In fact, our job in the kingdom of God is just begun. We can’t afford to sink into self-pity or hide away in our retirement just yet.
Let’s be after the work of the Lord. Now that we know what God expects of us, let’s get to it.
