A Good Reason Not to Get Angry

Justification.

It’s what keeps our country’s courts in business. Things happen, and if we can justify that we were wronged, we get recompense.

You crashed into my fence, your insurance covers it.

You slandered me in the press, I get financial compensation.

You used my copyrighted material, you must pay me damages or a licensing fee.

Then we get to the serious stuff. Investments. Divorce. Theft and murder.

When someone does us wrong, if we can prove it, we can get even … er, hold them accountable.

Yet, here’s the problem. Getting even … that is, holding someone accountable … often involves anger. We’re upset we were wronged, and we go after our offender in court.

We might get our money, but there are peripheral consequences.

Proverbs 30:33 gives us a good rundown.

“For pressing milk (churning butter) produces curds, pressing the nose (a good strong hit) produces blood, and pressing anger (getting even) produces strife.”

See the pattern? If we churn milk, we will get butter. Box someone in the nose and it will bleed.

How can we not expect to rile people when we get angry and take it out on themeven when we have the right?

Our laws are set up to protect us. Insurance is there for a reason. Libel laws are designed to help us. Copyrights? We deserve the rights to what we create.

Let’s use our laws as they were intended. The difference is our anger. That’s something we must toss out the window. It does no one any good.

We must model our actions after Christ’s example of humility, love, and honest concern for his fellow man.
