4 Rules for Better Communication

English Audio Version

Getting our meaning across is one of the most important things we do. People need to understand where we come from and what we need from them.

Of course, some people think they must do it with a baseball bat.

That’s not God’s way.

The book of Proverbs gives us 4 Rules for Better Communication. If we follow them, our lives will be easier, we’ll make better friends, and we won’t mind facing the people we work with each morning.

Proverbs 17:27 tells us:

“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.”

A sharp retort is not God’s way. We must keep our cool under pressure.

Proverbs 12:18 says:

“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

Using our words to even the score, no matter how justified, is outside God’s plan. We must work towards reconciliation.

Proverbs 20:19 says:

“Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler.”

Just because something is true doesn’t mean we’re to spread it around. That’s not what God wants from us.

Proverbs 18:13 tells us:

“If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”

We need to hear the other guy out. Let our opponent tell the other side of the story. We might discover they aren’t completely wrong.

God expects us to meet others halfway (and sometimes all the way). It’s the good end that we strive to bring about, and that means we must be cool under pressure, work towards reconciliation, refuse to talk trash about people, and listen to all sides of the situation.

Better communication with people is the start of a better relationship with God.
