Walking Our Dog

English Audio Version

Our canine beasts can be wonderful companions.

Most are charming and friendly, to their owners, at least. A few breeds are territorial, and others simply don’t care. They’ll take any hand that’s willing to pet them.

They snuggle on the couch (even when they’re too large), try to share our beds, and if we leave the car door open, they join us for a trip to the bank, grocery store, or laundromat.

Dogs are God’s all-around good creatures.

Except they have one very strong shortcoming. It’s why dogs need us around, why dogs wait on us to return from work and why they are so excited to see us.

Dogs can’t entertain themselves. They need human interaction to stimulate their sense of play.

They require us to give of our time, so that they can find purpose in their day. We need to scratch their ears, take them for a walk, and throw the ball with them.

We need to give unto them what they can’t give unto themselves.

Psalm 112:9 tells us our God does the same for us.

“He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.”

God, who is busy running the universe, takes out time to pay attention to us. We wait on him, and then he shows up. We become excited, he gives us a little of his time, and we feel life has meaning once more.

We need what we can’t give ourselves. We need God. We require his presence and his loving kindness to get through each day, and he’ll be there for us.

When we wait upon the Lord, he’ll show up just in time to renew our strength.

Excerpt of the Day

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
