Four Things to Treasure

What are our most vital possessions?

By that we mean, what would we grab first if our house was on fire and likely to be consumed?

Our stock portfolio? Our wedding pictures? Or would it be our jewelry box filled to the brim?

Maybe our first thought was our children, or a pet. That’s what we would save first.

What we choose to leave behind is of lesser importance and doesn’t carry much value in our hearts.

Let’s turn this to our spiritual treasures. After all, one day, this world will burn to a crisp, and all we’ll have left is what we can take with us. What are the important things, the things we should treasure?

Here are four:

Eternal Treasure No. 1:

Proverbs 22:1 says, “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.”

We can lose everything we can touch and still have our good name. If we lose our good name, nothing else matters.

Eternal Treasure No. 2:

Proverbs 11:30 tells us, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise.”

When we live by God’s standards, we will draw others into the kingdom of Christ. Our reward will be the souls who enter heaven at our side.

Eternal Treasure No. 3:

Matthew 6:19-21 admonishes, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

If we place our focus on houses, cars, and clothes, that’s what we’ll reach for when our house catches on fire. What we’ve done to minister to others is what we can take with us.

Eternal Treasure No. 4:

Matthew 6:33 reminds us how to find the best treasure. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Everything of permanence comes from the Father. All else will one day be consumed. Our vested interest must be in that which can never be taken away.

A good name and a life focused on Christ are the only legacy we can carry forward. They must be our most vital possessions.

Excerpt of the Day

Disbelief is fine. Refusing to move past it when confronted with the truth cuts God to the quick.
