There’s a phrase we’ve heard and probably said: United we stand; divided we fall. We often mean this to say if we work together, we’ll get the job completed. If a few slough off, then the final result will be less than satisfactory.
This applies to family unity, too. We might fight within our family, but heaven help anyone who steps into the fray. We pull a wall around our siblings that others aren’t allowed to cross.
We’ve heard of the military closing its ranks. If an outside attack comes against one of their own, they protect him or her at any cost. Police forces do the same. Teachers, doctors...we want to protect those who are bonded with us.
Colossians 3:11 says there is no Greek or Jew, no circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, or free. It’s all Christ.
Jesus is our wall. He’s the one that forms the boundary that none can be allowed to trespass. We may not agree with other Christians over doctrinal differences, but our Christ is the same. We must close ranks and protect our own.
Galatians 3:28 goes even further, for this verse tells us there is no male or female, for we are all one in Christ.
Christ sees us as sons and daughters in the same way a parent would see us as sons and daughters. Equal but different. Different but equal. In Christ we are not unisex, but equally of value in God’s eyes. When he hands out the responsibilities, he does it equally. When the rewards come out, everyone gets their share.
Ephesians 6:9 tells us we each have a master, no matter what our position is in this life. Our heavenly master sees us equally, never putting one above the other.
When we see others in the faith doing mighty things for God, remember what’s really important to us. It’s not the big house or the jet-set lifestyle that fulfills us. It’s someone holding the door, the roses when it’s our birthday, and the understanding we receive when we aren’t the person Christ wishes us to be. God may use the evangelist to win her thousands, but he wants to use us to win our neighbors. We are all in this for Jesus, and when we work together, Jesus is in it for us.
That familiar phrase carries a great deal of truth: United we really do stand; and if we become divided, we will come crashing to the ground.
In the arms of Jesus, we can stand tall before the world.
