In Parts 1 and 2, we saw that God’s pocketbook is very deep, for he loves to shower his creation with his blessings.
However, he is not an ATM. He will provide for our necessities, but cars, houses, and promotions are not the priorities of his heart.
What if we choose to ignore God’s real pocketbook? What if we ask just for ourselves, rather than for the reasons of expanding his kingdom? That is a frightful place to be, for then we will see the God that is filled with power and awesomeness.
We may not like what we find.
In this conclusion to this mini-series, we will see the other side of God’s awesomeness.
Just as Jesus is the king of our spiritual world, and all power and glory is his, so was Solomon the king of his physical world. His word was law, and none could exist without his permission.
In 1 Kings 2:16-22, King Solomon’s elder brother asked Bath-sheba to go to Solomon and ask for permission to wed a Shunammite woman. When his mother drew near, Solomon had a throne brought for her, and he promised her that whatever she asked, he would not deny her.
She only asked him for a small thing, for his elder brother to be allowed to wed. It seemed very innocent. However, even the most innocent of requests, when not directed of God, can bring disastrous results.
Solomon in his wisdom saw the ploy for what it was, a play for the kingdom. He swore before Jehovah that his brother had spoken the words to end his own life, and before nightfall, his brother was dead.
In Matthew 21:24, Jesus answered the chief priests and elders, “I also will ask you one question, which if you answer me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things.” The Word says they answered not, because they were afraid.
God will not be fooled. In Jeremiah 23:23, we read where God rebutted the false prophets that had led Israel astray. “Am I a God at hand,” asks Jehovah, “and not a God afar off?” He goes on to say that he fills the heaven and earth, and from him none can hide. He even hears the lies of the prophets when they claim to dream his dreams.
God’s words are spine-shiveringly awesome. We have a God that fills the heaven and the earth, and from him, none can hide. How glorious is that?
If that isn’t enough, we read in 1 John 5:14 the most empowering words in the New Testament. “We can have boldness with Jesus, that anything we ask according to his will, he hears us and will give us what we ask.”
God sees everything, including our innermost intents. Yet, when we ask according to his will, he will give us the desires of our hearts.
