High-placed people are surrounded by insulation.
No, not the furry, glass fiber kind. Rather, the human kind. Just try to call to the CEO or president of a large corporation. We can’t do it. We first reach the call center in Delhi, Seoul, or Dallas; and from there, we begin a slow climb up the chain of command, hoping one day to reach the top and talk to the person in charge.
This chain is called a buffer zone, and we’re forced to navigate it to keep the head honcho from being inundated by frivolous calls. We do the same thing in our families. “Have you asked your mother?” That cuts out many oddball requests. “Put it on your Christmas list.” We’ve just deferred the pleading until another day. “Work it out with your sister.” We’ve effectively strengthened our buffer zone to keep from dealing with the disruption.
God was surrounded with a buffer zone under Mosaic Law. The priests were in his direct chain of command. They were his call center. They took the requests of the people, and they carried them to God.
It seemed like a good plan, until God figured out it wasn’t working.
Mark 15:38 tells us:
“And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.”
The veil was God’s insulation, the buffer zone that separated him from direct interaction with his people. The death of Jesus stripped away that link in the chain of command, giving us direct access to the Father.
Mankind now had admission to the Holy of Holies, that place where God resides, the very location of God’s deep and eternal compassion for his creation.
We no longer had to hope God was there. We could interact with him on an individual basis, place our needs directly before him, and receive the touch of his tender hand.
God desired a closer relationship with us, and he took away everything that got in the way.
Do we want direct access to God? If so, all we need to do is open our hearts, clear away our buffer zone, and make that connection. It’s a phone call way. That phone call is known as prayer.
We have an open line with God. It’s as simple as picking up the phone.
