The Fruit of the Spirit
The orange is an amazing fruit. The peel on the outside covers up what is on the inside. It is the product of the tree, and while the outside provides a beautiful protection, the fruit inside is life-giving.
Proverbs 18:4
“The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.”
Maturity is a progressive understanding.
Romans 8:11
“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
We are sons of God.
Galatians 3:26
“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”
I John 4:17
“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.”
Amos 3:3
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”
You cannot walk with the Lord if you don’t agree with him.
Jeremiah 17:7-8
“Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.”
Blessed is the man that believes. He shall be like a tree.
Ephesians 5:1-2
“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.”
You will imitate Jesus and watch what you do and say.
Galatians 5:22-23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
1. Love – draws us together in one accord.
2. Joy – gives us a calm delight to leap and spin around with pleasure. It’s a present joy and one for the future. It’s a deep, inner joy. (Psalm 43:3-4; John 16:22; Psalm 5:11; I John 1-4; Proverbs 8:30; John 1:2, 18; Matthew 3:17)
3. Peace – is to rest in quietness; to be one with God; Jesus is our Prince of Peace. To be at peace means to be brought into harmony with God. (I Peter 1:2; Isaiah 32:17; II Corinthians 5:17-18; John 14-27)
If you feel unworthy, you don’t understand or experience true peace. The peace of God releases the faith of God in you to be able to receive all that God has for you. Rebellion is the opposite of peace.
In Ephesians 2:14, Jesus is our peace.
John 16:33 names Him as a spiritual force.
Isaiah 54:10 says His peace will never be removed.
The peace in our heart is to guide us.
4. Longsuffering – is patience. Psalm 84:10 and James 1:4 remind us to want nothing and not to provoke wrath.
Hebrews 10:35 and Ephesians 4:2 tell of our lowliness in love and our bond of peace.
One fruit will blend on into another one.
5. Gentleness – is softness and strength. Gentleness is never weakness. Make a person feel worthy of what God sees in them. I Thessalonians 2:7-8 says to deal with a person in gentleness.
David said God’s gentleness made him great.
6. Goodness – GOD NESS – is good and valuable holiness, made up of all of God’s attributes.
Genesis 1:6 is about the blessing of God.
Exodus 33:19 tells that all of God’s glory passed before him.
(also Psalm 41; I Peter 3:9; Micah 6:8; Ephesians 5:9, and James 1:17)
7. Meekness – is a gentleness, a teachable spirit. Proverbs 25:15 says it will break down resistance against you. It’s a humble heart that doesn’t contend with God. Moses was a good example closely linked to humbleness.
II Timothy 2:24 says don’t fight. Be kind and willing to suffer.
8. Temperance – is strength in self-control. We must crucify self. It’s an ability to govern our self by the image of Jesus.
II Peter 1:6 says to exercise knowledge.
9. Faith – is assurance in whom we believe.
II Peter 1:15 and Romans 1:16-17 says the Bible is the book of faith.
Galatians 5:22 tells us we will be squeezed, and asks if sweetness or bitterness will come out, like the orange.
Luke 1:75 says we serve Him without fear. We don’t have to fear God.
