Casting Off the Old

Recycling is all the rage in the 21st century.

It’s a way of conserving the world’s resources, of making certain that our children have access to what they need to live a comfortable life.

If we’re poor, it’s a matter of life and death. It’s survival. It’s how we make it to tomorrow.

On a recent broadcast of Triumphant Life Church, pastored by Harold and Bev Herring, a story emerged of a man who looked at the trash Americans toss aside, and he exclaimed, “I could become a millionaire on the things Americans throw away.”

To those who live in affluent America, we see it as nothing more than garbage.

Where does the church find itself? Are we affluent in Christ, able to toss aside the things of the world with ease, or are we spiritually destitute, clambering for the things of the world, hoping to survive to face another day?

Luke 5:37 says to live an affluent lifestyle:

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.”

Toss out those things that keep us from following Christ. In him we become a new creation, and we have no need of the trappings of the world.

Ezekiel 13:11 says it more plainly:

“Say to those who smear it with whitewash that it shall fall! There will be a deluge of rain, and you, O great hailstones, will fall, and a stormy wind break out.”

If we come to Christ, and we don’t change on the inside, the troubles of everyday living will become the rain that washes our illusion of sanctity from us, and our old man will be exposed before the world.

Christians should be the greatest recyclers in the world. Once we accept Christ, we should be tossing things in the garbage right and left, until only Jesus remains.

Let’s cast off our old man and live as kings through the grace and power of our Lord.
