God’s Writing Assignment

All good stories require three parts:

A good beginning.

A solid middle.

An exciting conclusion.

The best way to start the story is with a good hook. We need to grab our readers’ attention and make them want to continue. For example: Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a mighty king who lived in a castle…

Wait, wait. That one’s already been done. It goes like this:

In the beginning (Once upon a time, in a land far away…), God (…a mighty king who lived in a castle…) created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1.

That’s a pretty good beginning to God’s story. He wasn’t finished, however. It gets better as he continues.

We might write a solid middle like this: The knight rode bravely across the land to rescue the beautiful princess, searching in every hamlet and farmstead…

God’s story goes like this:

“But I do as the Father has commanded me (The knight rode bravely across the land…), so that the world may know that I love the Father (…to rescue the beautiful princess…). Rise, let us go from here (…searching in every hamlet and farmstead).” John 14:31.

We can’t stop there. Was he successful? Did the princess survive? What happened in the end? There must be an exciting conclusion, or the story will fall flat.

Here’s what we might write: The knight became king, proclaimed peace in all the land, and he and his princess bride lived in their castle happily ever after.

God wrote:

So then the Lord Jesus (The knight became king…), after he had spoken to them (…proclaimed peace in all the land…), was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God (…lived in their castle happily ever after.). Mark 16:19.

That’s an A+ story, with an intriguing opening, a formidable center section, and a rousing ending. High five, God! You get the gold star! We’re ready for Chapter Two.

Wait! He’s already started it. Open the Book to Revelation. That story’s even more exciting than the first, and we get to play a part. How fantastic is that? He’s writing every one of us into his masterful tale of what was, what is, and what the world will become. All we need to do is offer him who we are, and accept him into our heart. Then each line of the Bible becomes ours, and we get a starring role. We get to sit with the King at the right hand of God.

God’s story is on the final pages. If we live for him, the ending will be one we want to experience.
